Memoirs of Anna Davis Smith consist of a photostatic copy of a biographical essay touching on various episodes in Jefferson Davis's life, a copy of Confederate veteran containing an article by Smith that recounts events during the Civil War at Solitude Plantation, and a lengthy obituary of Anna Davis Smith in the Baton Rouge State-Times. The essay describes the incarceration and shackling of Jefferson Davis at Fort Monroe, Va., following the Civil War; Anna Davis Smith's own memories of Jefferson Davis and his second wife Varina from their visits to Solitude Plantation; Jefferson Davis's trip to the British Isles following his release from prison; and his final illness and death in 1889. In the Confederate veteran article Smith writes of sheltering and nursing wounded soldiers at Solitude Plantation, her mother's death during the siege of Port Hudson, and hostile encounters with occupying Union troops. The obituary describes Smith's relationship with Jefferson Davis and his wife and portrays her as a sprightly "little lady of the Confederacy" renowned for her wit and learning.
